What a cool place with a history full of love and compassion. I highly recommend Nicks, on Pico Blvd, a half a block west of La Cienega on the south side of the street! We ordered the french toast and the eggs Benedict. Delicious and really, REALLY filling. Our next stop was the beach and I crashed on my blanket and fell asleep. The eggs Benedict was cooked perfectly with that wonderful sauce which is almost as good as gravy. The home fries where excellent with chunks of luscious green peppers. The folks at Nicks are very cool. It's a family run cafe with a great sense of the 50's. It's old school and is a great example of how in LA their are still these pockets that are great points of local culture.

To each his own, that's how the saying goes, right?. I believe I have a larger pallet than most, "most" being fairly limited in this world of ours. For instance, I was with a friend who had never heard of Spam Musubi (a rice ball wrapped in seaweed with a thin slice of grilled Spam in the center). At the mention of it she scrunched her face and said eeew gross! Well, has a JA with Hawaiian in my roots, this is a staple from childhood. I get it, I know why it sounds gross. It's the mystery meat and grease and the fact that the can lasts forever. I feel a deep connection in the same way with Gardena Bowl Coffee Shop, 15707 Vermont Ave, Gardena CA 90247, 310-532-0820. Well, it's not the prettiest place, the service is not great; they forget a lot and sometimes it takes ten minutes to get a menu but the chashu (broiled pork with red sauce) breakfast is something I crave sometimes. The chashu is lean and leathery and comes with that spicy mustard sauce I love and reminds me of my father. For Father's day yesterday, it was my choice place. I guess the Saimin was mediocre but the Spam Musubi's are awesome. On top of everything, it's a bowling alley. That about says is it all. (I have own my own ball and shoes). I love this place!

On the corner of Western Avenue and 8th Street is a little shack called Pollo ala Brassa. It's been there as far as I can remember. It predates El Pollo Loco, I believe. It's a place where all the locals get their rotisserie chicken. On top of that, they make awesome french fries and have this really mean green chili salsa. If you have a cold or sinus trouble, this salsa will burn it out of your system. The chicken is excellent. They use real wood.

Contemporary Caribbean Cuisine's Cha Cha Cha has several locations across the County but the original is at 656 North Virgil Avenue LA CA 90004, 323-665-7723. We went there for lunch today because it was Angelene's B-Day and that's what she wanted. Whatever Lola wants... Today, Jeffe and I shared the Seafood Paella. How can you go wrong with seafood paella? It's the perfect way to start the week, don't you think? With mussel, clams and shrimps cooked in that saffron garlic rice, it's the kind of meal that you can go overboard and past your consumption limit. I near fell asleep in the office.
Glencrest Family Restaurant is a small local home cooking BBQ joint at 1146 Abbot Kinney, Venice CA 90291, 310-399-9641. Painter Dana Liston and I went on a bike ride to the beach. Well, we didn't go very far down the beach bike path but I eyed this BBQ place on the way and Dana said we should go for lunch after our "bike ride". So an hour later we're on our way back and we lock our bikes in front of the place. We ordered the pulled pork dinner and the BBQ ribs dinner with sweet potatoes, greens, red bean and rice, and mac n cheese. We both ordered the lemonade which wasn't fresh squeezed but it sure tasted delicious on that hot afternoon. The two folk running the place looked like they represented two generations of BBQ tradition. They use a lot of sauce, so if you're picky about that, you might want to ask for it on the side. Each dinner came with a cornbread. We were eyeing the sweet potato pie but by the time we finished, there was no way. It was tasteeeeeeeee!!!!

La Taquiza, 213-747-4849, is located at 3009 S Figueroa St
Los Angeles, CA. I had the Shrimp Mulita, Fish Mulita and an Al Pastor for lunch just now and am so sleepy. I also had a watermelon drink. Delicious! A Mulita is a sandwhich made of two tortillas with guacamole, meats, salsa and cheese. It's like a taco burger. My co-worker formerly was on staff at USC. Lot's of USC folk go here
Yesterday, I was with our crew installing a bench by artist Mark Walsh at the Del Amo Station on the Metro Blue Line. Directly across the street is the Del Amo Drive In, 2800 East Del Amo Blvd, Carson CA 90221. I ordered the Cheeseburger Combo which was the special. It wasn't bad. The burger reminded me of the old Big Boys Cheeseburger. The fries were excellent. I was so hungry from the installation that I ordered a Banana Split too. The woman making it was really cool and sort of giggling while she made it. She handed it to me and said, "there you go, it's a little bigger the normal." Sweeet!

3 Bears is located at 11916 South Figueroa St. LA CA 90061, 323-754-7665. Great hamburgers with names like Baby Bear, Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Grandma Bear. The french fries are absolutely amazing. Their peach cobbler is some of the best I ever had. This is a must if you really want an authentic LA meal.
Oaxacalifornia at Mercado La Paloma, 3655 South Grand Avenue, LA CA 90007, 213-747-8622 is one of the many places to grab a bite to eat at the Mercado La Paloma. I was their when it opened this morning so it was pretty empty. The DMV is right across the street and it's on the other side of the Harbor Freeway from USC and the California Science Center. My decaf Latte was delicious.

The corner of Norton and Pico Blvd., you may know this place as the building of Jewel's Catch One, a legendary dance-music club located at 4067 W Pico Blvd, LA CA 90019. The Vegan Cafe just opened up. The food was really-really good. All the meat dishes are sculpted soy. The chicken kind of looks chicken. However, it's their sides that I really enjoyed; greens, sweet potato, etc. A bit pricey, for Kio and I. We spent $40+ on lunch with two drinks, a meal and dessert.
